Not surprisingly, life became quiet after the airplane took Christopher and Nate away.

The parting from Christopher was heart-wrenching, of course. Devastating.

But then Jamie and Arley moved back to Lucy's condominium, which, as Lucy pointed out cheerfully, did not have peeling red linoleum floors and only one room with an air conditioner. Also, you could look out the window through glass that was transparent, not through some thick, wavery substance that stood between you and the world. And the stucco ceilings were high and angled, with beams and skylights. Best of all, Lucy said, instead of a falling-down back porch, there was a balcony—a civilized porch hanging off the side of the building, in line with all the other balconies, one after the other in a row, all containing barbecue grills and window boxes of flowers. There were evenings when you could grill your chicken practically elbow to elbow with a whole population of grillers. Why, you could even get new chicken recipes, maybe even meet a new man—you never know, Lucy said, the love of your life could be out there on one of those balconies, smiling as he turned his chicken thighs with a long fork and described his technique for basting lemon and garlic and butter right over the skin.

Jamie felt as though she'd slipped right back into her old life, as easy as diving into a river and letting the current take her along, as though the farmhouse life had never existed. And there was, she had to admit, much to be grateful for: Lucy was wonderful with Arley, the refrigerator was always stocked with fresh vegetables and Vitamin Water, and she got to attend Lucy's yoga class. Every morning at seven, five women showed up for class, held in the living room. Jamie participated as well. Her abs were tighter. Her mind was clearer. She slept better. She hadn't bitten anyone in a long time.

Kindergarten ended in mid-June with a lovely little graduation ceremony, complete with caps and gowns and rolled-up diplomas. Jamie posted her résumé online and started looking for teaching jobs in earnest. She e-mailed her old friend, Shana, and asked her to look out for a job for her at the girls' school, and Shana e-mailed back: I'M THINKING OF POISONING THE ART TEACHER SO THAT U AND I CAN BE 2GETHER AGAIN LOL. LOOKS LIKE A POSSIBILITY. I'LL LET U NO.

Then she got hired to teach a summer-school painting class each morning at the high school. Although it was temporary and didn't pay much, it was good for her—a foot in the door with the school system, just in case. The kids were lovely and tried hard to paint, and Arley either came with her to the classes or stayed with a woman in the condo who babysat for money. Mike Scanlon, who was now Lucy's official boyfriend, came over nearly every night and hung out with them. He was earnest and sweet, and Jamie could tell by his perpetually frightened
